Why It's Different

More than software: a strategy, filed once a year

Tax software is built to file the year you had. It won't tell you that restructuring your RRSP contributions, timing a TFSA withdrawal differently, or adjusting how your insurance is structured could have lowered this year's bill, because it isn't looking at the rest of your financial picture.

Because we prepare your return and advise on your broader financial plan, we see the connections a once-a-year filing service doesn't: how your insurance, investments, and retirement accounts interact with your tax situation, and where there's room to plan ahead instead of just reporting what already happened.

FAQ

Common questions about tax preparation

What documents do I need to provide for personal tax filing?
At minimum: your T-slips (T4, T4A, T5, T3, etc.), receipts for medical expenses, child care, tuition, and charitable donations, and last year's Notice of Assessment if you're a new client. Self-employed clients should also bring business income records and expense receipts. We'll send a specific checklist once we know your situation.
How do you help self-employed business owners reduce their taxable income?
By making sure every legitimate business expense is captured, such as home office use, vehicle costs, a portion of your phone and internet, and professional development, and by reviewing whether your income should flow through as a sole proprietor or whether incorporation would reduce your overall tax burden as your revenue grows.
Can tax preparation fees be deducted for business owners?
Partially. The portion of the fee that relates to preparing business, rental, or investment income can generally be deducted as an expense against that income. The portion covering a standard employment (T4) personal return typically isn't deductible. If you have both employment income and a side business, we can allocate the fee accordingly.
What should I do if the CRA contacts me about a past return?
First, confirm it's actually the CRA. Phone and email impersonation scams are common, and the real CRA won't demand payment by e-transfer, gift cards, or cryptocurrency, or threaten immediate arrest. Verify through your CRA My Account or by calling the CRA's published number directly. If it's a genuine review or audit request, don't respond alone. Bring us the notice and we'll help you respond accurately and on time.
Do I need to register for GST/HST as a sole proprietor?
Generally, once your worldwide taxable revenue crosses the CRA's small-supplier threshold, registration becomes mandatory rather than optional, and even below it, voluntary registration can make sense if you want to claim input tax credits on business purchases. We'll review your specific revenue and expense picture to tell you which situation you're in.
